Essay about Overcoming Procrastination is Not an Easy Task

Procrastination is the act of putting off doing things at a later time or date for no particular reason. For the person experiencing procrastination it can be either functional or dysfunctional according to the degree of the behavior (qtd. in Sweitzer 11). A person that procrastinates must realize they have a problem and find effective ways to overcome procrastination because they are putting their health, family and job at risk. According to Joseph Ferrari, a Professor of psychology at DePaul University, states that twenty percent of people realize they are chronic procrastinators which is a lifestyle to them. Some procrastinators are not born but pick up the behavior from family members (12). There are various reasons why people†¦show more content†¦They become increasingly hostile and angry† (Moore Jefferson).The cause of this disorder is unknown but some of its symptoms are, avoiding responsibility by claiming to forget, having fear of authority, procrastinating, and resisting other people’s suggestions. Counseling can help and identify the problem if it is treated at an early stage (Moore Jefferson). Procrastinators may be someone with neurological disorders such as, â€Å"Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHA), depression, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), chronic stress, sleep disorder or executive dysfunction ( inability to co-ordinate thoughts and feeling with goal-directed actions)† (deWaal). When all these disorders are associated with an individual it can harm their life tremendously. They could be looked over for promotion on a job, cause health problem because they refuse to be around other people at the gym of other public places, and can harm a relationship with family and friends because they do want to be involved in activities together. (deWaal). Whatever the reasons behind ones procrastination, they must be dealt with; there are strategies to overcoming this disorder. First, a person must be honest with themselves and recognize that they are procrastinating.
